Are the Holidays Really a Good Time to Network?

The Holiday Season is upon us. While we all bemoan, “I can’t believe it’s Thanksgiving, it snuck up on us,” there is a lot of advice out there that this is a good time to network.

I am going to advise you not to. I don’t mean stay home—go to the party! But go to deepen friendships, to make new friends. This is a great time to relax, enjoy, and practice.

Practice listening—a skill I work on everyday (and admittedly fail. I blame it on being the baby of the family, wanting to be heard!)

Practice asking interesting questions.

A former colleague told me that his favorite question is: What is a favorite project you are working on now?

This is a bit more interesting than asking someone what they do for a living. If you’re talking to a friend, you already know what they do, so asking about their favorite project can elicit many interesting answers.

Practice your elevator introduction. I have about 5 different ways that I can talk about this consulting side gig.  Some are straightforward, some are funny, some use curiosity. I practice them over and over again. I use people’s reactions to help refine the pitch.

Some examples: Are you volunteering with an organization to help collect toys for children?  Why not say, “I am a Santa’s Helper, helping him distribute toys this holiday.” Like reading books? Why not introduce yourself as a book lover and describe what you’re currently reading?

Send out holiday cards. There is no better way to get back in touch with people. It can be snail mail or email. Be creative, have fun!

Want to work on your own elevator pitch? Contact me at jankostner@gmail.com and I’ll set up a 15 minute, free consultation. My holiday gift to you.

Have a great Thanksgiving!
