Networking on a Budget

Did you ever think of taking a walk with someone as a networking activity? I really didn’t, until I had tea with Ellie Forman, a former colleague.

It had been a while since we’d seen each other. She is smart, accomplished, and creative, and it was her idea to take a walk while networking.

We caught up about our professional and personal lives, and she gave me many gifts in our one hour together.

One, she read the blog! She is a busy mother, volunteer, wife, and runs a the giving of a major corporation.

She gave me insights and ideas on networking—especially if you are looking for a job (hence How to Network on a Budget). Ellie reminded me that when you’re networking to find your next job, your income may be non-existent or lower than you want. The cost of coffee adds up!

Her suggestion? Ask a person to join you on a walk. No cost, no muss. Less stressful than wondering who is going to pay for the coffee or meal. Bonus? She reminded me that Chicago —and most locations—have wonderful parks, or magnificent streets to take a stroll.

Another budget idea: ask the person to meet at a museum on the free day. Many are located in the central business district. Choose one exhibit to explore together; if you are a bit introverted or nervous, the exhibit can help be a catalyst to conversation.

It can lead to more interesting conversations and show how you stand out from all of the others that are networking.

One more idea: try volunteering. There are many opportunities to meet new folks that require nothing but your time. This is an excellent way to get to know people and for people to get to know you. You never know who you’ll meet. You even meet Ellie, who is currently serving as President of The Women’s Board for the Joffrey Ballet

Thinking beyond the usual can be fun, affordable, and fruitful.

What are some of your favorite ways to network? Reach out and send me your ideas!
