Not Your Typical St. Valentine’s Day Story

As the notorious gangster George “Bugs” Moran was leaving The Pierre Apartment Hotel in Chicago on February 14, 1929, he ran into my grandmother “Gaga” and my then-four-year-old father. This meeting saved Moran’s life.

All three were living in the apartment hotel in 1929. In my mind's eye, I imagine the friendship between Gaga and Moran was struck in the elevator and the coffee-shop (Gaga was not a fan of cooking).

On that fateful Valentine’s Day, my father spotted Mr. Moran’s sports car, a Stutz Bearcat, known as America’s first sports car.

He demanded, as only as a four year old can, a ride.

According to Gaga, it was the temper tantrum of all temper tantrums. Mr. Moran couldn’t refuse, and gave my father the ride.

That ride made Moran late for his meeting, at the infamous garage where his gang was brutally murdered. This historical event became known as the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.

A chilling story. One thing is for sure, you never know when a connection could save your life.
