Life is Just Building Blocks
One of the delights of reading is getting to see the author talk about their book. I was lucky in May to see Gretchen Rubin who wrote “Life in Five Senses,” a wonderful book on how to really tune into seeing, tasting, touching, hearing, and smelling. Life becomes more…colorful, tasteful, well, delightful.
I first saw Rubin when she debuted her book “The Happiness Project” at the World Domination Summit in 2013, and have followed her since. The Summit was hosted by Chris Guillebeau, the founder of “The Art of Non Conformity,” who I met through my life-long friend Colleen Wainwright.
Because Colleen introduced me to Chris, I met Gretchen, and gained access to her work. This wasn't something that happened overnight, but through years and curiosity that is leading me to my new summer project. I am going do two touristy adventures and see how I can incorporate more of my senses into those visits.
Would you like to join me? Two that I have chosen are:
A Museum Visit
A visit to the National Mexican American Museum of Art on Friday, July 7 at 2:00 p.m. I haven’t been there in years and when I did visit, it was usually work-related with just a quick tour. Now I’ll get to wander around and really take in all the museum has to offer.
Then I’ll head over to La Mejikana, at 1820 South Ashland, at 4:00 p.m. for cocktails and appetizers.
A Tour of Bronzeville
I am a huge fan of Chicago historian Dilla. I first discovered him on a segment on WGN-TV and began to follow him on social media. On Saturday, July 15, I am going to finally take his Bronzeville tour.
It starts in the parking lot of the DuSable Museum of African American History, 740 East 56th Street at 12 noon. Sign up and purchase tickets here.
After the tour, I’ll Uber over for a quick drink at at 14 Parish, at 1462 East 53rd Street, at 2:00 p.m.
I have already purchased my tour ticket—message me if you are going to join, so we can coordinate! And of course, I will blog about the experience.
This is just a small example of how a friend introduced me to a pioneer in blogging, which lead me to reading at least two books by best-selling author Gretchen Rubin.
Networking is a series of building blocks that you get to build.
